There is no way to cure shingles, but you can treat it. Zostavax is used for people over 60.
Shingles is a herpes virus (herpes zoster) that reactivates from lying dormant in sensory nerve ganglia. In times of stress (both physical and emotional) it can overcome the baseline immune function of the host and reactivate along the same distribution of the nerve whose root it is inhabiting. It is for that reason that shingles occur in their characteristic unilateral horizontal band-like distribution. Shingles will typically regress spontaneously albeit slowly, but antiviral medication can shorten the duration of attacks and the Zoster vaccine can potentially reduce the amount of reactivation.
